Blog Advertising Gets a New Fan
06.29.04 (11:15 am)
by Genia V. Stevens
Think blog advertising is a waste of time and money? Think again.
Nike Tries a New Medium for Advertising: The Blog By NAT IVES
Gawker Media, a small company that operates snarky Web logs on culture and politics, like Gawker and Wonkette, has begun blogging on behalf of major advertisers.
Source: Nike Tries a New Medium for Advertising: The Blog
Blog advertising can be a great marketing avenue for e-commerce business owners. Auction sellers may find that blog advertising is the key to standing out from their competitors. But, how do you choose a blog to advertise your wares?
Finding targeted blogs is the first step. Search for blogs that are related to the products you sell. A quick search of different blog directories will help you find what you're looking for. Some suggested blog directories:
Blog Search Engine
Blog Street
Globe of Blogs
Blog Dump
Blog Wise
If you can't find a blog that is directly related to your product/service, purchase blog ad space on one or more of the popular political blogs. Caution: ad space on these blogs may be very expensive; however, you'll find that loyal readers of the more popular blogs often take the time to visit the blog's sponsors. A quick search for political blog in any of the listed directories will provide you with a list of great political blogs.
Don't forget that establishing your own blog will often lead people to your products and services. If you decide to start a blog, make sure you register your blog with the above mentioned directories.
If you need any further advice about blog advertising, send your question to: staff@theauctionboard.com.

Membership No Longer Required for PayPal
06.29.04 (10:43 am)
PayPal has made it easier for e-commerce businesses to accept PayPal payments. Buyers are no longer required to establish a PayPal account to pay their sellers for merchandise. This should streamline the payment process and allow faster processing of all payments.

Professional Women's Football Team on eBay
06.21.04 (8:39 pm)
by Genia V. Stevens You can own the Nashville Women's Dream football team -- the original team of the National Women's Football Association (NWFA). The NWFA was formed in August, 2000 by Catherine Masters -- a well known sports and entertainment entrepreneur. The NWFA started with two teams, the Nashville Dream and the Alabama Renegades, and held a pre-season showcase of six games. The eBay auction will provide a potential new owner for the Nashville Dream Women's Football team -- contingent on background check, financial approval and Senior Staff approval. According to the auction ad, "the winning bidder must agree to have their attorney meet with the current owner's attorney" to establish the final details of the sale. The starting bid is $39,999. Currently, there are no bidders -- with 6 days left on the auction. To view the auction, visit: National Women's Football Team Nashville Dream on eBay.

Early Prince Recording on Internet Auction
06.11.04 (4:27 pm)
Great news for Prince fans. Reported by the London AFP, an early Prince tape, recorded when the pop icon was only 17 years old, will go up for auction next week. This auction will also include memorabilia from Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, the Beatles, U2 and Oasis. The article didn't say what website the auction would take place on, so I guess we're to assume it will be eBay. Check eBay on Wednesday, June 16, 2004.
If you wish to purchase tickets to Prince's summer world tour, you'll find lots of ticket deals to choose from on eBay.

HitchPack Introduces Categories for Members
06.10.04 (11:52 pm)

HitchPack Introduces Categories for Members By Genia V. Stevens
Introduced last month, HitchPack.com surfaced as one of the first two websites to offer auction sellers the unique opportunity to ship items through people who are hitting the road and traveling where the seller wishes to ship an item. Sellers who are sending an item can post a listing on Hitchpack to look for travelers to deliver their items.
Now, Hitchpack community members have 18 categories and 5 subcategories they can use to sort their shipping requests. “We should have implemented this sooner because it makes a lot of sense,” says HitchPack president Yakim Almaleh. HitchPack’s president also stated that members from various auction sites suggested they would feel more comfortable using the service if shipping requests could be separated into categories.
HitchPack hopes the new categories will streamline navigation on the website for both auction sellers and members interested in delivering packages. In addition to the category introduction, HitchPack has announced cash incentives to members who refer a friend. HitchPack will now deposit $5 in each community member’s account when a member refers a friend.

New Auction Sites Debut
06.06.04 (10:21 am)
by Genia V. Stevens
As long as there are always people who possess that entrepreneurial spirit, auction sellers will always have hundreds of online auctions to choose from. And just as Pierre Omidyar started eBay in his living room with great hopes for his new adventure, many of these new auction site owners possess the same optimism.
TheAuctionBoard.com provides a free forum for new auction site owners to utilize for introducing and promoting their new businesses. Site owners can use the forum to provide continuous updates about their site's progress. Some of the new auction site owners join the forum seeking advice from others about auction scripts, marketing, or creating and maintaining their in-house auction forum. Some of the new owners join the forum just for promotion purposes only --- providing other forum members with information about fee changes, contests, or completed technical support issues.
Recent additions to the New Online Auctions forum at TheAuctionBoard.com are:
Shopperbag.com: a free auction site for uk buyers and sellers. At last update, the owner stated there was a registration fee; however, there's been some debate on that issue so that may change.
PureAuctions.com: 100% free to Bid Buy & Sell. This new auction site has a very active discussion forum that promotes the members and generates much enthusiasm for the site.
eBuysUSA: This site has that patriotic theme going. Very nice and clean front page. Easy to maneuver.
AuctionsAnonymous: This site boasts FREE Basic Listing, FREE Basic Relists, FREE Image Hosting, FAST Customer Service, $25 Sign up Credit Bonus, $10 Referral Credit Bonus, and Stores, Classifieds & Trades.
Small Town Auction: If you still need to feel like your auction site is your neighborhood corner market, give this one a look. Very nice site.
Kcove Auctions: Receive a $25 credit once you register. General auction site once registered under Kazor.com.
121Bid.com: Free UK Auction site. There are no listing fees or commission charges on this auction site.
WhatABid.net: Receive $100.00 INSTANTLY to use on this site towards their services. Refer your family, friends & associates and they will receive $100.00 and you will receive an additional $100.00 when they sign up.
To see if there are other auction sites that may fit your needs, check out the New Online Auctions forum at TheAuctionBoard.com. While you're there, check out the Promoting non-eBay forum, where auction sites that aren't so new are posted and promoted.
Many will argue that eBay is king and other auction sites can't compete. I'm glad Wal-Mart isn't considered the king of brick-and-mortar shopping or else ShopKo and Target would've given up a long time ago. Let's not forget that AOL used to lead and now MSN and Earthlink kick dust in AOL's face. It ain't over until . . . when? I haven't heard her singing yet.

PayPal's Buyer Credit Program, Read the Fine Print
06.04.04 (11:42 am)
by Genia V. Stevens
In another sweeping move to dominate the online payment services industry, eBay has introuduced PayPal's Buyer Credit program.
Partnered with GE Capital Consumer Card Co., PayPal now allows buyers to buy on credit and pay later -- at a whopping 20.8% interest rate and a 24.75% delinquency rate. The interest rate is actually called an interest rate on advances because buyers are using the GE card to fund their PayPal account. It would be akin to visiting the ATM and taking an advance from your credit card in the form of cash, then placing those funds into your PayPal account to pay for your purchases. Buyers receive a 26 day grace period if previous balance is zero, or the balance is paid in full, otherwise there is no grace period.
The late payment fee schedule is as follows: $20 for a balance of $50–$99.99; $25 for a balance of $100–$299.99; $29 for a balance of $300–$999.99; $35 for a balance of $1,000 or above. However, if your delinquent minimum pPayment was calculated on a new bBalance of less than $50, the late payment fee imposed will not exceed $15.
The credit line afforded to buyers is to be used for "personal, family or household purposes" only.
By signing up for the GE Capital Paypal Buyer Credit program, you authorize GE Capital to share with PayPal "information about you and your Credit Line to PayPal, Inc. (and its affiliates) for use in connection with PayPal Buyer Credit and as otherwise permitted by law, including to create and update their customer records, to assist them in better serving you, and to provide you with special promotions. In addition, you agree to the use of information about you and your Credit Line described in the Privacy Policy. The Privacy Policy is a part of this Agreement and is enclosed or attached hereto." That means, you are giving GE Capital the right to disburse your information to PayPal, who will then have the right to disburse your information to PayPal affiliates for the purpose of "updating your record" or offering you special promotions. I smell SPAM. I also smell PayPal having too much access to your credit history and other private information -- although they say they're not a bank.
One thing this PayPal Buyer Credit program through GE does is offer buyers full coverage for all their purchases. So, what does that mean? Does that mean that PayPal is admitting that no matter how many of their other Buyer Protection programs you use, there is no full protection?
I suggest that anyone interested in using this service, really reads the Terms of Agreement before signing up. I mean, really read them. You will be surprised at what you are authorizing once you sign up for this program.
