eBay has annouced changes to the email sent to losing bidders. These emails will now be sent immediately after your auction has ended and will be based on more relevant categories and keywords -- based on your auction title. eBay is hoping that by sending the emails immediately after your auction has ended that the results will be more current for your losing bidder. It wasn't clear whether the results will come from your eBay store or your current items listed for auction.

New eBay Authentication for 3rd Parties
04.29.04 (5:01 am)
by Genia V. Stevens
Good news for many developers creating 3rd party programs designed as auction tools for eBay. eBay has announced that it's launched a new authentication program that allows many third parties to manage an eBay member's activities without the need to access the eBay member's username and password. This new system is designed to protect eBay members, but we're sure it's also designed to keep eBay compatible with the many useful and productive 3rd party programs developed and/or in the making.
How this works:
The eBay member visits signin.ebay.com (make sure the https is in front) and authorizes the third-party to access the site and perform activities on his/her behalf.

eBay Store Sellers Can Now View Traffic
04.29.04 (4:46 am)
by Genia V. Stevens
eBay sellers who sell through a store can now see exactly how much traffic their store is receiving and where that traffic is coming from. This service is free with your paid store subscription. The type of information eBay sellers now have access to is how many page views each of their eBay pages is receiving, the number of unique visitors, where the visitors are coming from, and exactly what the visitors are searching for. This type of information is crucial to increasing sales for eBay sellers and reducing items that just aren't moving at a fast enough rate. Another important item this new feature offers is the eBay seller will know which keywords searchers are using to find their store and their items.
For those who subscribe to the Featured and Anchors Store service, there are additional traffic services available. These sellers will know how often their visitors are returning and you'll receive a Bid and Buy Now report which will enable you to see what type of visits are the most successful for your business.
To learn more about the new Traffic Reporting service, visit: eBay Stores Traffic Reports

How to Find Product Sources
04.20.04 (8:32 pm)
How to Find Product Sources By KAREN E. SPAEDER, Entrepreneur.com
It seemed like such a great idea: You found the ideal niche market, complete with potential customers by the dozens and profit potential galore. Maybe you already found the ultimate location, or you've put together a stellar e-commerce site that would even put Amazon.com to shame.
There's just one problem. You haven't the foggiest idea where to find all the products you need in order to stock your shelves.
Don't be dismayed. This scenario happens time and again with new entrepreneurs, and it's understandable. Even if you come up with a brilliant idea of a product you want to sell, there's still the tiny detail of finding the actual product. You want to sell XYZ, but you're wondering, "Where exactly can I get a supply of XYZ to sell—and get it for a fair price?"
The good news is, finding what you need isn't quite the needle-in-a-haystack task it's envisioned to be. "My experience is, there are a lot of existing channels used to match up manufacturers and distributors of products. Trade shows and trade magazines are two of the best," says Roger Green, co-founder of Cullinane & Green Inc., an executive coaching, consulting and publishing firm.
Trade shows alone offer multiple opportunities for you to not only spot upcoming trends, but also to network with potential suppliers and hopefully find just the right product source. The New York International Gift Fair, for instance, attracts thousands of exhibitors, organized by type of product. Attending a trade show also gives you the opportunity to demonstrate you mean business. "By being there, you establish yourself as someone being in business as opposed to being a consumer. The overwhelming majority [of attendees] are serious buyers," says Green, who, along with partner Joe Cullinane, has a diverse background in sales, marketing and senior management that's familiarized him with the ins and outs of product sourcing. "You also get to compare prices across a range, and you get a good sense of the business without having to put a lot of air miles into it."
Trade magazines, meanwhile, can be an inexpensive way to find companies with which you want to correspond. Scour them frequently for mentions of any companies that might offer the products you need, then try to find out whether they'll be exhibiting at any upcoming trade shows you can attend.
Trade organizations or industry associations related to the products you're interested in are yet another potential source of valuable contacts, including international companies. "[These organizations] have trade missions, and they have access to manufacturers from other countries," says Green. He notes that one of their main goals is to match up buyers and sellers.
So how do you go about finding the right industry association? Check out these resources for help in locating the proper channels:
- Directory of Associations from Concept Marketing Group Inc.
- Gale's Encyclopedia of Associations. And if you're not interested in purchasing your own set, most large public libraries carry a copy in their reference department.
- National Trade and Professional Associations of the United States
Start by contacting someone at the company or store and asking them whether they might want to sell their product in your hometown. "If something's been successful in one area, you'll find the company will want to expand but just don't have the resources to do it," says Cullinane.
Image Counts
Finding the suppliers you want is just the first step toward stocking your shelves with the proper inventory. Next, you've got some impressing to do. "You have to be perceived as a company and not a consumer," stresses Cullinane.
"You have to present yourself as someone who is seriously interested in building a business," adds Green, who advises establishing yourself as a business entity as opposed to a sole proprietorship. " 'Inc.' makes all the difference in the world in [the company extending you] credit in the future."
Keep in mind, also, that some firms, especially international ones, often prefer working with registered wholesalers of their products as opposed to retailers, says Green, so be prepared to inquire with a particular company about how you might become one. Companies that offer this option to buyers will likely ask you to fill out a few forms and provide some details on your banking history and so forth. You may need letters of credit and references in order to prove your ability to make good on your word. The advantage of becoming a wholesaler? Wholesale rates, which are often well below the retail prices of a given company.
When making that initial contact with a potential vendor, be prepared to talk about what you do and why they would want to do business with you. Letters of credit from your bank, and letters of reference from people who know you and can vouch for your credibility, are also key—those can help you get an appointment with the vendor in the first place. Green advises starting small: "Find an easy one, and then build from there. If you start dealing with someone local who knows you and can see you, in a few months, you'll have a track record and can use the first one as a reference. It's like starting a fire—use kindling first, not the log."
Look to your social network to determine whether you might know anyone who can help you. Make sure you tell friends and family what you're doing—you never know who they might know. "It's amazing the results you'll get [when you spread the word]," says Cullinane.
One caveat: If you do business with someone you know, make sure you clearly establish the terms of the relationship from the start. As Green cautions, "It's still a business relationship at the end of the day," cautions Green. "There's a saying among lawyers: The best contracts are drawn between people who don't trust each other." So enlist the help of an attorney who knows the ins and outs of drawing up the kind of contract you need—the money will be well-spent in the long run.
So You've Got a Supplier
Once you've found the companies that manufacture the products you want to sell, you need to get samples and be sure they're exactly what you want. "Be prepared to invest in that," says Green. "Sometimes companies will supply samples at no charge, but not always. And don't go looking for freebies—that can ruin your credibility."
How many vendors do you need? "Just enough," says Cullinane. In B2B situations, you'll likely want at least two suppliers, maybe three. It's a good idea to have backup suppliers in case something ever falls through with one of your regulars. "A lot of times you build your business around one supplier," explains Cullinane, "and if something [happens to them], you could be out of business."
Above all, remember the most important element of a successful retail business: the customer. Even if you've got a handle on where to get your product, you'll want to make sure you haven't forgotten the crucial step of determining whether that product will be met with a warm reception. "An entrepreneur needs to look at 'What do my customers need that they can't get?' " says Cullinane. "Satisfy that niche. Be the person who provides that."

Looking for Wholesalers in Canada?
04.19.04 (2:25 am)
A new user at TheAuctionBoard's forum wondered if our current members were aware of wholesalers in Canada. With customs and taxes, importing goods from the US into Canada is rarely a viable option for auction sellers who wish to turn a profit through online auctions. Here's a brief list of the websites we found for the new member:
cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2996046 379&category=617 An old eBay auction -- a seller was selling a list of Canadian wholesalers. I've no idea how legit this is, I simply found the list during a Google search. The auction had ended, but you can still contact the seller if you want.
Then, there's Udisco Online: udisco.com (supposedly a hobby wholesaler in Canada).
wholesalejewelryfinding.com
cbsc.org/sask/sbis/search/disp lay.cfm?Code=8000&coll=SK_PRO VBIS_E (Canada Business Info Source)

Pixby Software Launches Fast Photos Auction Photo Editor
04.17.04 (2:20 am)
Pixby Software Launches Fast Photos Auction Photo Editor Helps Auction Sellers Prepare Their Photos Quickly and Easily
Pixby Software, LLC. officially launched its flagship product Fast Photos on April 16, 2004. In an increasingly crowded market, auction sellers know that effective photos are critical to increasing both sales volume and revenue and reducing post-sale problems. The typical eBay seller has many auctions running at once, with each one including several photos. That adds up to a tremendous amount of repetitive and sometimes complex work that general purpose image editors are not equipped to handle efficiently.
Fast Photos is the only photo editor specifically designed to speed both novice and expert auction sellers through the auction photo editing process. Fast Photos has the auction photo editing workflow built into its user interface, with key editing tasks now accomplished with a single mouse click.
With Fast Photos, auction sellers can now browse, edit, upload and preview photos with one simple tool. Fast Photos provides one-click editing tools that include Create eBay Gallery Thumbnail, Watermark Text, Auto Enhance, Drop Shadows, Resize, JPEG compress with live preview and more.
Fast Photos is a PC application. A fully functional trial version is available to the public at pixby.com. Program registration is only US$24.95, and may be completed from the Pixby web site.
About Pixby Software, LLC:
Pixby Software, LLC. is an independent software company committed to creating software that makes it easy to work with digital photos.
Based in Albany, California, Pixby was founded in 2002 by David Allen, a veteran developer of easy-to-use software products with prior experience at iPIX, PictureWorks, Farallon Communications and IBM. For the past 8 years Dave has been working exclusively on digital photography software.

Pollution Free Alternative Vehicle Available on eBay

Pollution Free Alternative Vehicle Available on eBay
Veteran Inventor Revs Up The Creativity For Pollution-Free, Alternative Fuel Motor Conversion Kit. All Rights, Trade Secrets To Go To Highest eBay Bidder May 10 - May 20, 2004.
A newly developed technology that allows motors to run pollution free on alternative fuels can be purchased by the highest bidder on eBay in May, 2004.
It's a story that is unique in every way. A successful invention/product development veteran creates an innovative new technology that converts typical engines into pollution free motors - novel and newsworthy in and of itself. However, what this creative entrepreneur plans to do with his patented-pending technology is what makes the story even more unique.
Meritt successfully installed his invention on a small 100 cc motorcycle engine to prove its functionality and capabilities. The prototyped motor, which was recently evaluated at a fully licensed motor vehicle smog inspection station in California, emits a measured exhaust that is 99% pollution free. What's more, the conversion kit allows the motor to actually exhaust high levels of oxygen, making it possible to literally breathe the engine exhaust.
The design of the pollution-free motor is protected by a pending patent, and many of the modifications are trade secrets known only to Meritt and his development team. As far as providing additional information on the technology, what can be mentioned is that there have been extensive internal and external mechanical and electrical modifications to the prototype motor. With further development, this first-stage technology has extensive market potential for use in cars, trucks, boats, tractors, gas powered garden equipment, generators and any other gas powered products.
Unique Marketing of the Technology - eBay Is The Way (May 10 - May 20, 2004) Instead of the typical licensing avenues that similar technologies might be subjected to, Meritt has decided to try a somewhat unorthodox yet creative marketing angle. He will sell the rights to the technology and a working prototype on eBay to the highest bidder, with no minimum bid. The online auction start date will run from May 10 - May 20, 2004. The bids will be for the one-time technology transfer fee that includes pending patents, trade secrets, a fully functional prototype engine, and all documentation associated with this invention. It will give the buyer full profit making capabilities with no future royalties going to Meritt International. Once purchased, the buyer is free to further develop the technology for as many industry applications as possible.
Meritt is confident that a corporation, university or entrepreneur will be able to acquire his technology and take it to the next level. "Some day we will deplete the global supply of oil, and when that happens, millions of gas combustion engines will be waiting for an alternative fuel. Whoever owns this technology owns the rights to a possible solution, and the opportunity to generate a lot of money," says Meritt.
When asked why he is selling the rights and not developing this potentially lucrative technology himself, Meritt responds, "It will require more development to take this technology to the next level. I have already managed a very successful company, and frankly, I need to keep my focus there rather than starting another new company from scratch. I really want to see this technology developed into a mainstream product that will help the environment, and I feel this is the best way."

IttyBiddy Niche Auction Site for Kids' Items
04.12.04 (10:53 pm)
IttyBiddy Niche Auction Site for Kids' Items
IttyBiddy.com is a niche online auction site developed exclusively for those looking to buy or sell kids' items. According to Chip Street, one of IttyBiddy's partners, the business was originally inspired by eBay's lack of a children's section. TheAuctionBoard.com had an opportunity to interview Chip. Here's what Chip had to say during our Q&A session.
TheAuctionBoard.com: What made you decide to start up IttyBiddy?
Chip: A number of factors inspired us to build ittybiddy.com. One of our business partners -- and one client -- were both expecting babies at about the same time. Others of us are parents, but our children are older. We no longer have hand-me-downs available to share, but remember how wonderful it was to receive quality baby clothes from friends and family. Consequently, there was a lot of discussion around the office about finding used baby clothes and furniture, as well as online information resources to chat and discuss pregnancy, birth and child rearing with other parents. We found many online communities for discussion of parenting issues, and lots of sellers on eBay who trade in childrens' items. But eBay has no specific children's category, and so kids' items are spread all over the site in various categories. Also, we frankly find eBay a real bear to navigate. We couldn't find any other smaller, quality auction sites dedicated to childrens' goods that were professionally designed and executed. Additionally, we were approached by another client to consult with them in choosing auction software to build a new reverse auction site. In doing research for him, we learned about all the quality software available to allow one to operate a dynamic auction community. We decided that the universe was conspiring to make this opportunity clear to us, and it seemed like a natural fit to develop a community for parents to discuss and share their experiences -- and to offer auctions that specialize in maternity and childrens' items."
TheAuctionBoard.com: Did you have any prior experience, such as selling on eBay or other auction venues?
Chip: Some of our consultants are longtime eBay sellers, and several of our first users were experienced eBay'ers looking for a more focused outlet
TheAuctionBoard.com: Is this a family business?
Chip: Ittybiddy is owned by Group Of People, a web development company co-owned by a small circle of friends.
Chip Street, an IttyBiddy partner

TheAuctionBoard.com: Where are you located?
Chip: We operate from Santa Cruz, California, just on the edge of Silicon Valley, south of San Francisco. Our office is a short walk from West Cliff Drive, which overlooks the beautiful Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. I have the best commute in the world -- I saw whales this morning on my way to work.
TheAuctionBoard.com: What are your expectations for Itty Biddy?
Chip: We've had some folks express concern that we're going up against eBay, and that there's no way to match their resources. I like to say that we're not in competition with eBay; I like to set my expectations more realistically than that. eBay has a huge dedicated core audience and community, and they'll continue to use eBay in spite of its rising fees and difficult navigation. They've been at it long enough to learn the workarounds, and make it work for them. We don't have the userbase to be attractive to eBay users yet. My goal is to appeal to the many, many buyers of childrens' goods who would rather shop in an environment that is targeted to their interests, that offers a community for discussion with other like-minded people, and is socially conscious. Nobody has written any sniper software for Itty Biddy, allowing for last-millisecond sport-bids. I'd like Itty Biddy to be a more friendly, accessible space -- where buyers and sellers both see it as a community in which they have some ownership. I'd like to see us develop a core user base numbering simply in the thousands, made up by users who aren't interested in the intense, predatory quality of eBay, or who see this as a viable companion option to eBay that offers a more complete community experience. That alone is a challenging goal.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Can one use your services for fundraising? If yes, can you elaborate further on that?
Chip: We offer storefronts, just like eBay, where sellers can have all their items gathered together. They can upload a logo, and post a description of themselves or their organization. There's no setup fee for this service, and only a small monthly maintenance fee. We see this as a great opportunity for childcare centers, parents' groups, and others to raise funds. Family daycare providers can solicit donations from their parents, to sell online. Larger organizations already receive donations of goods that are parent/child related, and again they can create a storefront. For non-profits, we reduce these fees by 25%. That discount applies to any other fees as well. It's a very simple process, manually managed by our staff. They just notify us of their non profit ID and direct us to their website or other contact info. Once we verify their status, we turn on the discount. It's that simple. If we find that organizations are receiving donations of items that fall outside our current categories, we'll consider expanding the category listing to accomodate.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Give an example of prohibited and restricted items.
Chip: Our current set of categories is very specific to childrens' items. So clearly, barbeques and car parts simply have no home here yet. But beyond that, if it fits in our category listing, it makes sense for Itty Biddy, whether it's new, used, manufactured or handmade. In fact, I'm excited about seeing more hand made and one-of-a-kind items appearing in Itty Biddy by craftspersons of all kinds.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Do you charge a listing fee?
Chip: There are two fees: fees for posting upgrades at Itty Biddy, and fees for closing a sale. The seller pays all of these fees, buyers pay nothing beyond the selling price. If the seller chooses any of the upgrades that have costs associated with them, they pay when posting. We currently send out an invoice to sellers at the beginning of each month for a percentage of the closing value of any sales the previous month.

auctionDEUCE.com Helps Chicago Residents Sell on eBay
Auction drop-off services are becoming the latest trend for people who wish to turn a profit on eBay, but not bother with the headaches of listing items, dealing with customers, or shipping products. Family members and friends have often listed items on eBay for others as a favor. Today, drop-off services are fighting for that business.
We caught up with the owner of auctionDEUCE.com, Brian Nygard. auctionDEUCE is an eBay drop-off service located in Chicago, IL.
TheAuctionBoard.com: What made you decide to start auctionDEUCE?
auctionDEUCE: Why else? To make some money! There is nothing more I would like to do professionally than develop a successful business and be my own boss.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Does the name DEUCE mean anything? I see you have it in all caps.
auctionDEUCE: DEUCE is my nickname. It is derived from my father Dewayne's nickname, which is Dewey. There is no significance in the caps; it is simply the way I would like it to be printed. My wife and her best friend gave me the name.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Is this a family business?
auctionDEUCE: This is not a family business although my mother is ready to sell just about every item in her house since I started doing this! She has been real supportive. auctionDEUCE.com has probably gotten more hits from her than anyone else, she likes to watch her items and the other items I have listed. My family has always been supportive in every venture I have ever been interested in. I am lucky.
TheAuctionBoard.com: What area of Chicago do you cover?
auctionDEUCE: auctionDEUCE mainly covers the north side of Chicago's trendy Roscoe Village neighborhood (roscoevillage.org/index.cfm?section=map). Although items may be accepted from anywhere, the Roscoe Village neighborhood, where I live, and the surrounding areas is where advertising efforts are mainly focused. There are no other plans to franchise or open another location, that is unless I move. My approach on this is very different from the other organizations out there looking to expand with franchising and these outrageous brick and mortar storefronts. In my opinion, this business must have low overhead. I am interested in seeing how these business models will play themselves out. I may eventually, on the cheap, have a location outside my home office and storage facility, but don't think it will prove necessary or profitable. I'm sure glad I didn't open a prominent storefront like I was going to two months ago because one just went up three blocks from my target territory! What would stop someone from opening right next door. I think I made the right decision and no overhead is a really nice thing, that's all I'll say.
TheAuctionBoard.com: I see you mention your service as a fundraising tool. Can you elaborate further on that?
auctionDEUCE: auctionDEUCE does indeed offer its services to organizations and schools that need to supplement their fundraising programs. Members solicit donations in the form of items to be sold, and auctionDEUCE will do the rest. Items collected will be put in a global marketplace where millions of people will have access to the items; this will help the organization receive the best possible price for those items. In addition to the standard services, our fundraising customers may also be eligible for collection of items during their fundraising event. Fundraising this way can also be an ongoing project for the organization. auctionDEUCE will promote the fundraiser on the auctionDEUCE.com website and in the neighborhood. Individual donors will receive a letter acknowledging their donations. Organizations will receive discounts off of the fees typically earned by auctionDEUCE, although standard item eligibility requirements apply.
TheAuctionBoard.com: You state on your website that you help your clients estimate their item's eBay value. What exactly is an eBay value and how do you go about establishing that?
auctionDEUCE: auctionDEUCE will research general merchandise to help estimate its value. This is simply done by looking at similar items that have been listed, are currently listed, or have sold on eBay and other Internet sites. Customers ultimately are to set the minimum price an item will be listed for.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Give an example of prohibited and restricted eBay items.
auctionDEUCE: auctionDEUCE abides by eBay's prohibited and restricted list, which can be found here: pages.ebay.com/help/policies/items-o v.html. At this time, auctionDEUCE is unable to accept most furniture due to shipping restrictions. Acceptable items are those that have an estimated value of at least $50, weigh less than 150 pounds, and are legal to be sold on Size of an item may also restrict certain items. auctionDEUCE reserves the right to refuse to sell any item for any reason. auctionDEUCE is currently considering changing the minimum estimated value of at least $50 to $100/$250 this summer.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Once you have the client's item and you've established the terms of your agreement, you're ready to sell the item. What do you do from there?
auctionDEUCE: An attractive listing will be created, complete with digital photographs and a detailed description of the item. auctionDEUCE can handle all of the photographing, writing, customer service, payment processing, packaging & shipping. Once the item ships, payment will be sent to the customer via mail.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Do you use PayPal as your exclusive payment processor? If so, is the customer charged the PayPal fees on top of your fee?
auctionDEUCE: Yes, PayPal is used, but auctionDEUCE accepts other types of payments methods. There is no preference. Yes, PayPal fees will normally be passed along to the customer on top of the listing fee. Although to date they have not been. Customers are welcome to discuss final fee schedules (including commission) and adjustments may be made. auctionDEUCE customizes a lot of agreements with each relationship.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Is the customer charged the eBay fee on top of your fee?
auctionDEUCE: Yes.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Do you sell vehicles?
auctionDEUCE: Yes. auctionDEUCE has listed vehicles in the past and will be listing couple later this year. Acceptance of such an item is case by case and subject to listing rejection for any reason. All vehicle listings to date were personal relationship customers, but hey that is a lot of my business! People I know and the people they know!
TheAuctionBoard.com: Can you please give me your commission schedule?
auctionDEUCE: Sure. Our commission is based on the item's final sales price. 35% of the first $200 ; 30% of the next $300; 20% of the remaining amount (over $500) ; Minimum $19.99 commission. eBay & PayPal also have a set of fees if your item sells.
TheAuctionBoard.com: I saw on your website that you don't charge your clients to list items. Is this correct?
auctionDEUCE: Yes indeed, listing your stuff on eBay is free with auctionDEUCE. We have two listing types. The Basic Listing is our free one. Although it does cost auctionDEUCE to list it for you we'll give you a 7-Day listing with a $1.00 opening bid and no reserve price. Also, a "Gallery" photo & a bold title that will help your item stand out at no charge. Customers may also select our Upgraded Listing, which is $9.99 (spring special - it's normally $19.99) upfront. This option is best for customers who want to set a reserve price, a "Buy It Now" price, and/or a higher minimum bid. Also, the listing will run for 10 days and includes the basic listing options. This fee will be credited into the final fee if the item sells and is non-refundable.
TheAuctionBoard.com: What do you do when you have a large amount of items to store and sell? Maybe a church wants you to sell off a lot of stuff for them. Where would you store all of this?
auctionDEUCE: auctionDEUCE does not store or ship any of the items at the Roscoe Village location. We store all items with a StortageMart Storage & Moving Super*Store conveniently located at 2647 N. Western Ave., which is less than a mile from the auctionDEUCE office location. StorageMart also provides in part some of the packaging and shipping resources used by auctionDEUCE.
TheAuctionBoard.com: What kind of equipment do you use for taking photos of the items you sell?
auctionDEUCE: auctionDEUCE uses Olympus digital photography equipment for taking photos of items. Customers who would like to provide them, i.e. for a vehicle, have also provided digital photographs.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Once the item sells, how does your client receive payment?
auctionDEUCE: United States Postal Service Money Order, auctionDEUCE check, or PayPal are the payments options. If a customer prefers another method they just need to inquire, no cash.
TheAuctionBoard.com: Is there anything else you want our readers to know?
auctionDEUCE: auctionDEUCE also builds basic websites. Definitely not pro, but very reasonably price. Here are couple examples: chitownnorth.com, selectrlty.com, karennygard.com, and many more.

eBay Provides eBay University CD Free
04.10.04 (3:24 pm)
I received in the mail today the eBay University CD, a $19.95 value, free. The CD contains information for new (and seasoned) sellers. It's designed to help you get started with searching and browsing, bidding and buying. You'll also get researching tips and help on setting up simple listings. For sellers who have been on eBay for a little while, there's a section that provides suggestions for photography that may help boost your sales. You'll also receive tips for pricing strategies. If you need a little guidance for writing your auction ads, this CD provides tips on helping you provide the information buyers will need.
I popped the CD into my laptop. It has a video of an actual eBay University road show -- presented by Jim "Griff" Griffith. While you're watching the video, examples pop up on the side screen. There's a lot more information provided.
It looks like a decent free gift.
To learn more, visit eBay University. No, I don't know if eBay sent the disk to everyone, and I don't know how to get it. Sorry!

360 Degree Spins on eBay Photos
04.08.04 (10:53 pm)
Have you ever wished you could provide your customers with a 360 degree view of your product? No, I don't mean 6 different photos. I mean, you could actually allow your customer the ability to click on the image and watch the image spin 360 degrees. Epixio.com offers new 3D Spin technlogy, auction galleries, portfolios, and slideshow creations that will allow eBay sellers the ability to present their products in a new way.
Another interesting imaging technique is Shape-n-Glow. With this technology, backgrounds can be replaced to allow for a much sharper image. This could increase sales for an eBay seller. Here's an example:

This example is from MrCoolPix.com
eBay is a crowded marketplace. Sellers are looking for tools to help them get ahead of the crowd. Maybe these tools can help -- just a little, maybe?

Coupian Lets You Offer PayPal Coupons to Buyers
04.04.04 (5:23 pm)
TheAuctionBoard.com interviewed Steve Brawitsch, the owner of Coupian, a dot.com designed to allow auction sellers the opportunity to provide online coupons to old and new customers as a reward (or incentive). Buyers who use PayPal to pay for their purchases can redeem these online coupons at the Coupian website.
TheAuctionBoard: How did you come to own Coupian?
Steve: I saw it for sale on eBay. I'm always looking for something unique out there on eBay, and as you know (regarding the websites sold out there) 98% of them are the same old thing. I saw Coupian for sale and said to myself, "Now there is something different."
TheAuctionBoard: Your business is designed to provide e-commerce professionals who use PayPal as their payment processor a way to motivate potential customers. Would you agree?
Steve: Yes, exactly. And also to get existing customers to buy again.
TheAuctionBoard: So you would say it's an incentive-based program?
Steve: Yes, I'd say that. Coupian members can [encourage] potential and existing customers to buy by offering them a discount on future purchases or services.
TheAuctionBoard: We met through eBay. The information on your website indicates that your services are geared towards auction sellers -- particularly eBay. Care to respond?
Steve: Yes, auction sellers are who I would like to target, along with anyone who owns a website selling products or services and uses PayPal as their payment processor.
TheAuctionBoard: So your service can be used on any auction site?
Steve: Absolutely. If the seller uses PayPal, they can send special discount codes [generated] on the Coupian site to anyone.
TheAuctionBoard: There's an annual fee associated with your service. Can you tell us the fee and what a member gets with that fee?
Steve: The annual fee is $10. For that fee they can access the Coupian site and generate as many coupons as they wish for a year.
TheAuctionBoard: Does the company you bought Coupian from offer any marketing support?
Steve: In a small way, yes. They provided a marketing guide which suggested a few places to advertise, plus I can ask them questions if I need to.
TheAuctionBoard: What is your background, Steve?
Steve: I work for a software company as a technical support manager. Buying websites and running them is a seondary business.
TheAuctionBoard: So Coupian pretty much runs itself?
Steve: Yes it does. The only things I really need to do is check for new members and advertise.
TheAuctionBoard: Is there anything else you'd like our readers to know?
Steve: Yes. I've setup a special ID and password for them to access the member area and see what it's all about. They need to go to: Coupian.com and enter ID: test1 and password: test1 to see the members area. Also, if they email me at members@coupian.com and say they heard about me on TheAuctionBoard.com, I will set them up with a membership for only $5 a year.
TheAuctionBoard: Excellent! Thank you, Steve.
With eBay offering the Anything Points Program to sellers as a way to help sellers boost sales, it's certainly obvious that sellers need a way to entice buyers. Coupian is certainly a look in the right direction.
**Coupian is not affiliated with, or endorsed by eBay or PayPal.

Best Buy Outlets on eBay
04.02.04 (9:29 am)
At least this company admits they setup shop on eBay. Lots of companies do it, but very few will admit it. Companies sell off their overstock on eBay all the time -- typically using a few "Powersellers" to do it. The company saves a ton of money on labor and makes even more on the product than it would selling the product at an outlet store.
So, Best Buy has joined the gang of eBay sellers:
In a move designed to reach a new group of potential customers, Richfield-based Best Buy Co. said Tuesday it has set up two outlet shops on eBay, the nation's leading online auction house. To read more of the article: Best Buy sets up camp on eBay.

Yes, you read that right. Earthlink and eBay have teamed up to monopolize the internet -- as if teaming up with MSN wasn't enough in 2003. According to an announcent on the eBay Community Boards, "eBay and Earthlink have teamed up to launch a new Internet Service Provider (ISP) solution for eBay members." Members may choose between dialup, cable, and DSL service.
Users will also have their own email address @planetebay.net.
One member of TheAuctionBoard.com in a thread discussing this partnership, said: "Branding...branding...branding. These guys are on a roll that is going to make Microsoft look like a school boy." Does Micrsoft have something to fear?
