eBay Drop-Off Stores
03.31.04 (10:57 am)
|
Would you like to sell on eBay, but you just don't have the time? Would you like to sell on eBay, but you just don't have the desire to learn the tricks of the trade? You just want to collect your cash and keep moving, right? Now, you can take your items to an eBay Drop Store and let them deal with the hassle of listing and selling your product. These drop-off stores are popping up everywhere, and eventually, you'll have one in a city near you. If you're willing to pay 20% - 38% of your purchase price to the Quick Drop (one of such drop-off stores) then you can avoid the hassle of selling online. If you're in the Chicago area, give auctionDEUCE a try. Friendly people and reasonable price.

Buy a Degree in Days, Not Years
03.29.04 (2:10 pm)
|
Talk about earning a degree on the fast track. It seems I have been proven incorrect. We were discussing in an economics course in one of my graduate classes that when the economy gets really bad, even some of the most honest people will stoop to some of the most desperate measures. I disagreed. Well, I ran across this eBay auction that proves me incorrect. Now you can buy a Bachelor's degree -- complete with a raised sealed and voice verification that you did indeed receive a Bachelor's degree from that particular institution. Pay for the auction and receive your degree in days -- not years. Can you imagine? Let's just hope that the person with the phoney BA isn't the one who ends up with the phoney MBA from Harvard and running the country.

I was doing my usual cruisin' of eBay, when I saw Him: Jesus. I've been washed by the blood of Christ.
All kidding aside. Who would buy that? That doesn't even look like Jesus! Who are they kidding?

Courtney Love's Coffin on eBay
03.28.04 (11:49 pm)
Yeah, well, you can buy the coffin from her Mono video on eBay. To view the item, visit Coffin in Courtney Love Video. It's currently at $520 with about 5 days left on the auction.
If that doesn't float your boat, you can buy an Israeli gas mask on eBay. Apparently the raised terror threats in the US have resulted in a possible financial gain for eBay sellers.
I did a quick check for "israel gas mask" and my search came back with this. A full suit will cost ya $20,000.

Successful eBayer Sells Business for $5M
03.27.04 (12:37 am)
Posted: Mar 26 2004, 11:09 PM
Well well, after all this time, seems these 2 great eBay sellers are ready to get out.
Here is the listing:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3805711 911
The description, in part:
Marie's CDs And Online Auctions, LLC is available for sale. Our asking price is $5,000,000 (Five Million Dollars). Originally began on eBay in early 1999, Marie's CD's And Online Auctions (known today by eBay User ID 'JayAndMarie') has built up the single strongest brand name on eBay. The business was begun in early 1999, and has been profitable since early 2000. The business used the eBay User ID 'onecentcds@aol.com' until 2003, when the eBay ID was changed to 'jayandmarie' to anticipate and prepare for an expansion in our business strategy.
The business was started, and is still owned and operated today, by Marie and Jay Senese of Sierra Madre, California. Please visit our 'about me' page here on eBay to learn more about us. There are appropriate links on that page to online sources for supplemental material. As owners of the business, we recognize that the opportunity exists for expansion of this brand name and the market we have established, but we are unable to commit the time or the financial resources needed to do it properly. Asking price for the business is $5,000,000. Jay Senese and / or Marie Senese will be available to work through a contractual transition period with the new owners, if requested.

Howard Stern Supporters Rally on eBay
03.26.04 (1:42 pm)
While checking on my listings on eBay and looking for any interesting finds, I ran across the Dump BUSH, Save HOWARD STERN button auction:
Proudly wear your 2 1/4 inch round pinback button, don't let the government take away any more of your rights....
Even if you don't like Stern, his political views should not be cause for removal from any radio station.....
According to the auction ad, there's a bill designed to infringe upon a person's first amendment rights: The Indecency Bill. I got lightheaded just reading this auction ad.
Now, what I find funny here is that eBay removed an auction ad awhile back that was posted by a seller who made political statements about Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was running for Governor of California. eBay's spokersperson at the time said that eBay should not be used as a place to make political statements. Another seller, a Canadian, had his Axis and Weasles playing cards pulled because the cards made fun of the Bush Administration.
So, I wonder how long before this seller's auction is closed -- if it's closed at all. eBay is so picky about when they decide to follow their own rules.

Would You Like to Buy Some . . . Water?
03.26.04 (10:25 am)
I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this one: . . . another person, perhaps after having rummaged through bins, is selling two empty bottles of the water. If you want it, you can find it on eBay. This has all been prompted by the Dasani Water auction. Bottles of the stuff are being sold off on the online auction site eBay. It's bottled water and I can't imagine why anyone would participate in an auction for bottled water that is NOT a charity auction.
Ok, I just did a search for Dasani on eBay UK and my search came back with tons of results. It looks like Dasani was banned in Europe. The item is hot, hot, hot over there. You may be able to make yourself a nice little profit by selling your European neighbors some Dasani.

Froogle and the Auction Webmaster
03.26.04 (9:33 am)
The following is dialogue between a few members of The Auction Board's discussion forum regarding the effectiveness of Google's Froogle:
Posted: Feb 14 2004, 03:56 PM Froogle is a nice tool. I've never talked to anyone who's actually had a success story because of it though.
--Genia
Posted: Feb 14 2004, 10:02 PM
The jury's still out whether Froogle will be a real success story or not but I think it could become a helpful tool. It would be great if the spiders that index the listings could actually pull the corrrect Buy-It-Now prices and the correct photos from the pages. Hopefully if they ever get out of the Beta stage these things will be corrected. I'm not sure what Tom did or didn't do that allows Froogle to index Romahawk so well but I've had several items listed at BidVille for months and none show up on Froogle. My Romahawk items seem to show up around three weeks to a month after I list them. It helps to make the best use possible out of your listings title. Of course if no one is actively searching for your particular item Froogle is not going to be much help.
--bluebolt7
Posted: Feb 14 2004, 10:28 PM
I can help explain this. It is very difficult for auction sites to submit up to date data feeds to froogle, depending of course on the script used. The scripts I use make it almost impossible for me to supply Froogle with accurate data feeds, and in fact, I gave up on it.
Here is the problem: Data feeds depend on current information, at least as current as possible. Many online auction scripts issue a new auction number, and therefore, a new URL each time the item is relisted. That means that every 7 to 14 days, an entire new data feed must be compiled. I found it almost impossible to do this, so I can't imagine how large sites could cope with it, unless they get the script modified to use the same number each relist, and therefore, the same URL.
It could very well be that the script Romahawk uses does not issue a new number with each relist. That would make data feeds easier to compile, thats for sure.
FWIW, I found the Froogle Beta Team to be very co-operative, and interested in working with me, even though I had a site with only around 1,500 products. If they could have made it work, they would have.
Hope this sheds some light on the subject of Froogle Data Feeds.
--Jim
Posted: Feb 14 2004, 11:45 PM Hi Jim. Thanks for your insight. I have my Romahawk listings set for twenty relistings each. I am almost one hundred per cent certain that Romahawk keeps the same listing number when items relist. I'm sure it's easier on Romahawk to do it that way. Anyway I'm thankful it gets my listings indexed by Froogle. I had an eBay store for two months, uploaded to Froogle the url eBay supplied me with in order for Froogle to index my listings and still my eBay store listing never showed up on Froogle. I honestly think I get more page views on my Romahawk listings than I ever did on my eBay store items.
--bluebolt7
Posted: Mar 23 2004, 06:15 PM
Just thought I'd stop in to say that things are coming along nicely at Romahawk Auctions. I've sold two items in the last day to two newly registered bidders. Romahawk items are continuing to be indexed in the Froogle search engine and I've noticed that Front Page Featured items seem to get indexed quicker than other items that are not featured. Of course new bidders are wonderful but we can always use new sellers as well. If you are looking for a well run, stable site then give Romahawk a chance and list a few items.
--bluebolt7
Now, what is Froogle? Simply put, "Froogle is an extension of the Google search engine that millions of people around the globe use daily to research products before they purchase," according to the wording on Froogle's website. Now, is this true that millions of people use it daily? I don't know. But, since Google does index millions of webpages every month, it's very likely that if you have an e-commerce website that's optimized properly, your products are indexed in Froogle. The benefits of being a member of an auction site that has its pages indexed by Froogle is that you don't have to own a website! Your items will be indexed by Froogle and included in search results, all without need you ever becoming a webmaster.

Quick Tips for Auction Sellers
03.26.04 (9:11 am)
Quick Tips for Auction Sellers by Genia V. Stevens March 25, 2004
Generating Traffic for Your Online Auctions -- Crash Course in Marketing
About Me pages are an excellent way to entice potential buyers to visit your active auctions. Create an About Me page and ensure that a link to your About Me page in your auction ad. Once visitors are on your About Me page, typically they will see a complete list of all your current auctions.
Include a link to your About Me page, auction store, or e-commerce page on a business card that you staple to the invoice you send your successful buyer. Make sure you send a business card because this will entice your buyer to place the card in her/his wallet or handbag and not simply toss your contact information aside along with the invoice.
Anytime a potential buyer emails you using the "Ask the Seller" a question feature, always respond with a link to your website, About Me Page, or auction store in the signature tag. Remember to thank the potential buyer for taking the time to show interest in your product.
Learn the basics of search engine optimization. Millions of shoppers use the internet everyday to find great deals on products and services. Learning to optimize your website for basic website searches can mean a lot for your profit margin. Start with SiteProNews.
Start a blog. Blogging is an excellent marketing tool. If you are an avid collector of Beanie Babies, start blogging about that. You'll be surprised how many people will read your blog on a regular basis. You can then drive sales from your blog! I won't recommend a blogging service because you'll need to find one that fits your needs. Start with a search on Google.
Saving Money, Learning to Budget -- Finance & Accounting
Auction sellers are very thrifty and often try bartering with other businesses before they offer to buy goods and services. This is a good business practice; however, remember you should be very well prepared with something equal in value to offer in trade.
Networking with other businesses for advertising leads is a great way to save money and earn money. Oftentimes, companies will charge an enormous amount of money for mailing lists. Perhaps you can trade your mailing list with another company's mailing list -- especially if you are sure your mailing lists are different because you are in different industries.
Even if you operate a small home office, you may find that buying business supplies in bulk may save you money. Think of it this way: if you run to Wal-Mart and purchase 1 ream of printer paper a month at $3.50 a ream, 1 pack of pens a month at $1.99, and 1 printer refill every 2 months at $34.99 you pay $275.82 over the course of 12 months. If you bought the same items in bulk at one time, you pay less: $2.99 x 12 reams of paper, 1.25 x 12 packs of pens, and $25 for a 6 pack of printer cartridges: $200.88. You save $74.94.
R&D -- Research & Development
Test and develop your auction ads. You should try writing different versions of your auction ad to see which version works best--resulting in the most sales.
There's much talk about what days are the best starting days and which days are the best ending days for eBay auctions -- especially taking the different coasts into consideration. This, too, is one of those items you'll need to test to determine the best option for your product.

Clinton Boyhood Home Back & Who Cares?
03.25.04 (10:16 am)
Ok, apparently the rumor that the seller of the Clinton boyhood home was a shill bidder was apparently just a rumor and the home is back on eBay. We received yet another tip that our first tip was false (hey, at least we know people are reading our blog!).
So, the article, Clinton house returns to online auction at $200,000, and the eBay listing are available for viewing if you're interested. Personally, I'm bored of it.

Own Britney Spears's Gown: Visit eBay
03.24.04 (4:08 pm)
Now YOU can own a gown once worn by the girl who had the shortest marriage in history: Britney Spears (do I hear screams of delight from all the gay men and teenage girls in the house?). Oh, I really should've saved this post for my other blog, but it seemed more appropriate here.
NEW YORK, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Showtime Networks is donating a couture Roberto Cavalli dress worn by Britney Spears to eBay. The full-length black gown will be auctioned off to the highest bidder and all proceeds will benefit the Britney Spears Foundation. The dress was worn by Britney Spears on January 10, 2004, during a promotional shoot for her upcoming SHOWTIME live concert on March 28th at *9PM ET/PT. I'm so excited I could just . . . spit. I'm running right over to empty out my cookie jar of pennies. Well, the money is for a good cause, so I suppose I should be nice.

Advice for Choosing a Good Host
03.24.04 (10:08 am)
A topic near and dear to me: choosing a good host. SiteProNews had an article today on the subject:
9 Things to Know Before Selecting a Web Host for Your Business By Chris Kivlehan It may seem simple yet it is often times overlooked. When it comes to choosing the right Internet hosting provider for their websites, the majority of business owners or companies know very little about making the best Internet/web hosting decisions.
What makes a good Internet/web hoster for a business website?
What makes a bad one?
How can the wrong Internet/web hoster help/harm your business?
What are the different types of Internet/web hosting services?
Which ones are best for which industries?
A few of the other hints I liked:
3. Don't Confuse Size With Stability. Just because a web hosting company is big, does not mean it is stable and secure. In fact, many of the biggest filed for bankruptcy protection or were saved by being sold to some other company, in some cases causing uncomfortable transitions in service for their clients. How do you protect yourself? Ask some key questions:
How long has the host been in business? Is current ownership the same as always? Are they profitable and cash flow positive from operation-generated revenue? 4. Don't Make Price Your Only Priority. The old saying "you get what you pay for" applies to most things in life, and hosting is certainly one of those things. When you over-prioritize price, you run the risk of ending up with a host that will provide you with a connection to the Internet and little else in terms of support (and even that connection may be running at maximum capacity or have uptime issues).
SiteProNews is a great resource for auction webmasters. Check it out. If you can't find the above article, simply click on the archives button at the very top of the page and search for it.

Clinton Childhood Home Removed from eBay
03.23.04 (5:22 am)
|
I received a tip from someone named Sherry Moran. I was informed that Bill Clinton's childhood home was removed from eBay and the seller rede2sale was suspended. After doing a little checking around, I found a blog that said the home got up to over $350,000. Wow! Suspicions must've grown and eBay pulled the plug. Rumor has it that the seller was doing what is commonly called "shill bidding." But, don't quote us on that. eBay has not commented on the issue - yet.

Update on Saddam Items on eBay
03.19.04 (4:45 pm)
The following is a discussion on The Auction Board's forum:
I wonder why eBay let's it happen, doesn't that fall under their policy for "Embargoed Goods, Prohibited Countries" where that policy states:
"Various U.S. agencies have sanctions in place that substantially regulate or ban all trade with particular countries, including Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, and other countries"
Above policy found at: pages.ebay.com/help/policies/embargo .html
or how about eBay's policy on "Offensive Material"
"eBay has always exercised judgment in allowing or disallowing certain listings consistent with the spirit of a worldwide community. Therefore, eBay will judiciously disallow listings or items that promote or glorify hatred, violence, or racial intolerance, or items that promote organizations (such as the KKK, Nazis, neo-Nazis, and Aryan Nation) with such views. For example, eBay will generally remove items that bear the marks of such organizations, such as relics from the KKK or Nazi helmets"
above policy found at:pages.ebay.com/help/policies/offensi ve.html (but then reading more on this second policy I can see how it would "slip through the loopholes") This whole thing is rotten to the core and all monies from these auctions should be going back to Iraq, afterall, it's all stolen items, did those thos men pay for those items (unless I missed it in the article, I think not).

03.17.04 (2:47 pm)
The auction is already up to $215,700.02 with 20 days left on the auction before it closes. You can own a piece of history. Well, if you want that piece and you're willing to live in AR!
Take a look at the Clinton childhood home auction.
Ya gotta admit... it's a great way to cut out the middle person and make a lot more money than the owner could sell the house for in his local market. I don't suppose the person who buys the house will actually live in it. Do you?

Defunct Auction Sites: What Happens to Client List?
03.16.04 (6:31 pm)
The following is a discussion on The Auction Board's discussion forum:
Doesn't it seem that every week or 2 another online auction goes under? Why doesn't some of them get together and merge and create an even larger auction community? Wouldn't that beat going under? I was a member of bidroo and it was sad to see them disappear one day. I think it would be great if they would send out an email to all their members and tell them that and refer them to another online auction. Any thoughts?
Ben Christian-Auctions
In a perfect world, this would be the case.
In this world, most are concerned with THEIR site and not the community as a whole. After all, what are they going to get out of sending their members over to another web site before they shut their's down?
-------------------- Regards, Andrew Ketterer AKWebsitedesign Auction Crowd
It wouldn't hurt them to send their members to another auction site before they shut down -- unless they plan on opening another auction site and using their members as points of contact for later. Which is quite a possibility. One of the things you never want to just hand over to your competitors is your list of leads -- regardless of whether you know what your future plans are or not. Now, if your competitor is willing to pay you for those contacts, that's another thing. And yes, companies do it all the time even though they swear they will never sell your contact information to a third party. Well, Bidroo.com won't, but once Bidroo.com no longer exists (which is the company you have an agreement with), the individuals who were once Bidroo.com can do whatever they want with your contact information! I'm just using Bidroo as an example.
This is serious business -- so serious that businesses make key employees sign non-disclosure agreements that they will never walk out of the company with a list of the company's clients and attempt to sell that list to another company. We work hard to gain clients/members. Handing them over to another company is like shooting yourself in the foot.
It's always been my belief that many defunct auction sites magically reappear as something else. It's best to keep your client list on ya, and not refer your members elsewhere.

Ya Coulda Had a Vietnamese Wife
03.15.04 (6:28 pm)
Well, if you live in Taiwan, you could've had a Vietnamese wife. All you had to do is bid for her on eBay -- before eBay yanked the plug on the auction! According to an article in the Fresno Bee, a seller was auctioning off 3 Vietnamese women to anyone who lived in Taiwan. eBay pulled the plug and supposedly reported the seller to the local authorities. Damn them!
Seriously though, one of the members from The Auction Board says this is a common occurrence and often happens in Cambodia and Hong Kong also.

eBay & Microsoft to Offer Powersellers XML
03.01.04 (9:44 pm)
I thought this might be of interest to some sellers (not sure how many though):
EBay relies on so-called power users to drive its steadily impressive sales and profit growth, so tools that help those sellers run more auctions likely will boost the company's bottom line. Meanwhile, Microsoft has made the XML and Web-services features of Office 2003 one of the main selling points of its software.

New Auction Template User Friendly
03.01.04 (8:21 pm)
A new auction template service, compliments of Bay Dream Designs, makes creating auction ads simple and easy. Never have I seen an auction template program that's so user-friendly before. Once you've signed up for your free account, you simply choose the template you want you work with, upload your pictures, type your text, choose your colors, border, and tell the program to generate the html code that you will then cut and paste into eBay or any other auction site you use. It's that simple!
Until the domain name is completely promulgated, preview the program at ebay.virtues.net. You may join a discussion about the program at The Auction Board's Discussion Forum to learn more.

Marketing Partners: Tag-Team Your Way To Success

Partnership Offers: If you sell CDs, consider partnering with an auction seller who sells home stereo equipment. You could also consider partnering with a seller who sells DVD players, TVs, or even MP3 players. Here
