Auction Site Owners, Do Your Research
02.24.04 (8:22 pm)
Many adventurous new entrepreneurs are venturing into the world of online auctions and developing their own online auction houses. Some of the newest eBay alternatives are BidzFree, TopBidz.com, and KaBid! Auctions. These eBay alternatives offer sellers free listings, low-cost listing features, and often offer sellers the ability to sell their items with a zero final value fee! But, there are challenges the auction site owner must face.

1. Driving seller traffic to the auction site.
2. Driving buyer traffic to the auction site.
3. Charging sellers a listing fee when there's little buyer traffic.
4. Charging sellers a feature listing fee when there's little buyer traffic to the auction site.

eBay, Give Me My Points Back
02.23.04 (7:46 pm)
On February 18, 2004 eBay announced that sellers could start offering Anything Points to buyers as an incentive to boost sales. Offering Anything Points to a buyer is easy. For each point you wish to offer your buyer, 1 cent is added to your final eBay bill. Offer your buyer 100 Anything Points and really drive sales. It only costs you $1.00. Your buyer can then use those Anything Points to pay for an item, pay their taxes, pay for shipping or insurance (which was previously excluded), and even take advantage of offers from FTD, Priceline, and Netflix.

But, what happens if you offer a buyer Anything Points and the buyer returns the item? Do you get your Anything Points back? No. Those Anything Points are gone forever. In addition, your buyer has to purchase your item using PayPal. Is this eBay's attempt to further corner the online payment market as more and more sellers and buyers seek online payment alternatives?

So, consider this. How often do you process returns? Will PayPal always be your online payment processor of choice?

eBay Drop Off Stores Coming
02.23.04 (6:23 pm)
QuikDrop expects to open more than 200 eBay drop-off stores this year

QuikDrop International expects to expand its franchise chain of eBay drop-off stores from 8 to more than 200 locations in the U.S. and Australia by the end of this year, with about half of the U.S. sites operated by a former franchise owner of Mailboxes Etc. stores, QuikDrop co-founder Jack Reynolds tells Internet Retailer.

Endore.com Offers Suggestions? Give me a break!
02.18.04 (7:02 pm)
Endore.com is out of business, so they claim.

They were even kind enough to offer their out-of-luck customers links to hosting sites that have special offers. I'd think twice about using any of their suggestions. One of the suggestions on the list has already provided me with poor customer service before I even knew Endore would be out of business.

Suggestion: find your own hosting service. You can do this easily by doing a search on Google for "web hosting forums." The folks on those forums will give you lots of information.

I'd be curious to find out which one of those suggestions they offered is really Endore.com reinvented, or partners with Endore in some way.

eBay Scammer Makes Quick Adjustment
02.18.04 (2:10 pm)
Ok, and they're back! I received the same email today stating my eBay account would be closed if I didn't update my records. This time if points to a different phoney eBay update page. It looks exactly like the On Tracks page they were using -- which has been shut down.

Looks like the site hasn't completely promulgated yet because I received the IP address to access the site, and not the actual site name: 217.8.136.144/verify.html.

Check it out, but please, DON'T fill it out. Ha!

Phoney eBay Update Page
02.17.04 (10:49 am)
People must still fall for this scam, because scammers are still workin' it!

I received another "you need to update your eBay account info or your account will be suspended" email. Ha! The page it reroutes you to: On-Tracks.com

The scammers are asking for your eBay password, your PayPal password, your credit card numbers -- anything and everything they can use to take over your account.

You would think these people had better things to do. Perhaps the eBay scammers and the virus creators (I still think many of these viruses are a product of the folks who create virus protection programs) should meet and be buddies.

eBay Not Required to Remove Libelous Comments
02.12.04 (12:47 am)
The courts have ruled that eBay is not responsible for and does not have to remove false or libelous feedback left by another eBay user. What does this mean for you, as a seller on eBay? It probably means you're out of luck. The feedback system is setup for eBay's benefit. Once you receive negative feedback, the quickest way to bring your feedback rating back up to par is to buy and hope that your seller gives you positive feedback. Once you buy, eBay gets its cut of the seller's final value fee. The court's ruling has essentially removed any motivation for eBay to remove false or libelous comments from your feedback rating. That means, once you've dealt with an angry customer and the customer has left you negative feedback, you're on your own.

Of course, Powersellers are different, I'm sure. They will be able to call up that special 800 number designated especially for them and get some real customer service if they have any concerns about negative feedback.

There are tools designed to help the auction buyer snatch that great deal out from under other unsuspecting buyers. But are these tools helpful or burdensome?

How many auction sellers actually use these auction tools in their business? Are these tools designed more for the powerseller in mind?

Auction Professionals: Brand Yourself Successfully
02.02.04 (1:22 pm)
What is this branding thing, you ask? To put it in its simplest form, branding is the process you use to develop certain characteristic or distinctions about your company. It's marketing in its most crucial form. It goes beyond your company name and logos -- although these things are important for creating visual reminders of your total package.

Some Basics of Branding:

(a) Be consistent with your marketing strategy. If you want to be known as a seller who deals in collectibles, try not to mix other products and services into the same advertising campaign.

(b) Try to choose a business name/domain name that will help establish your brand. KimsCollectibles (for example) is a good way to brand yourself as a dealer in collectible items. KimsHappyHome may not be.

(c) Develop a good customer service model. This is very important in the auction business. Once your auction business is a success, you'll be met with much criticism and animosity. If you've provided your customers with excellent service, you can help head off some of the backlash that may occur from the multitude of negative comments you'll find posted about your business all over the internet.

(d) NEVER fall into the trap of participating in discussions about your integrity. You've been setup to look bad you'll just end up frustrated and saying something that makes you look guilty anyway. That's why companies hire public relations people to handle all publicity. The PR people can defend your company, remain calm, and keep your company's reputation intact at the same time. Since many of you won't be hiring PR folks, just keep this in mind: if you know you're doing business legitimately, keep moving and don't waste your time.

In the meantime, no publicity is bad publicity; it's all in the way you handle it. How you handle bad publicity . . . yes, that's a part of your brand, too.

Drop Shipping Disasters
02.01.04 (8:28 pm)
Avoid Drop Shipping Disasters
by Genia V. Stevens
February 01, 2004

If you're a seasoned auction seller, you've probably heard about drop shipping. If you're new to selling at online auctions, you may not be aware of this increasingly popular way to sell products without ever carrying an inventory. A brief explanation of drop shipping is when you (as the seller), place items for sell on your e-commerce website -- or through an auction -- that actually still belongs to someone else (the dropshipper). These products are in the dropshipper's inventory; you do not actually have possession of the item. Once a customer visits your website and purchases the item, you collect payment from the buyer, then forward payment for the item (minus your profit) on to the drop shipper. You then supply the drop shipper with your customer's name and address so the item can be delivered. While this may seem like a great way to start your own business without the expense of having to carry an inventory, there are common disasters associated with drop shipping.

Due to the rise in eBay sellers -- approximately 60 million -- many auction sellers are finding it increasingly difficult to sell their products and services through the largest online auction house. Creating a promotional alliance with other websites and auction sellers could be the key to your success.

Partnership Offers: If you sell CDs, consider partnering with an auction seller who sells home stereo equipment. You could also consider partnering with a seller who sells DVD players, TVs, or even MP3 players. Here are some examples of a partnership offer
